Library History
In 1986, the Penrose Chamber of Commerce formed a library committee to meet the challenge of adding a library to their growing community. By 1987, the Penrose Community Library was officially opened in a small, donated 450 square foot space. All of the books, shelving and library materials were contributed by members of the community. Through an LSCA Grant in 1991, the library was moved to a new home of an 1800 square foot renovated military barracks, with a volunteer librarian to serve the patrons. The library building is now leased from the Penrose Park and Recreation District.
The community has continued to be dedicated to the library’s mission. During November 1991, they passed a 3.25 mil levy tax initiative, forming the Penrose Community Library District. At the present time, the library boasts of approximately 3,100 card holders, making up 56% of the Penrose population and 14,000 volumes. There is currently one full time staff member, eight part time employees and approximately 15 volunteers. In 1998, the Penrose Community voted to increase the mil levy tax amount to 5.5%, effective in the year 2000.
At the present time the library is literally bursting at the seams and plans are underway to build a new facility.
