Position Title: Library Clerk Assistant

Reports to: Circulation Desk Supervisor

Part-time, Non-exempt. 

$15.16 per hour.  20-25 hours per week, must be available Saturdays.

Purpose of Position:

The purpose of this position is to perform library clerical tasks and assist patrons with circulation and reference desk tasks; to return library materials to appropriate shelf or storage; shelf read and weed; and to assist the Circulation Desk Supervisor with any necessary duties. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The following duties are normal for this position.  These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive.  Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Performs circulation desk duties; checks books and materials in and out, issues library cards and registers new borrowers, reserves books and materials for patrons, opens and closes the library when necessary, collects fee payments, renews materials both in person and over the telephone, explains library procedures and policies, checks in courier items, assists patrons with faxing, copying and laminating services.
  • Assists patrons in locating materials and information.
  • Shelves library materials and maintains the order of the collections to facilitate public access to resources.
  • Reads shelves and returns misplaced items to their appropriate spot.
  • Pulls materials needing mending.
  • Assists with the weeding of the collection.
  • Receives and processes Inter-Library Loan and borrowing requests from patrons and other libraries.
  • Assists patrons with computer and internet access.
  • Maintains patron count and reference statistics when required.
  • Ability to multitask.
  • Must have excellent customer service skills.
  • Assist with fundraisers as needed.

Additional Tasks and Responsibilities:

While the following tasks are necessary for the operation of the library, they are not an essential part of the purpose of the position and may also be performed by other staff members.

  • Retrieves and sorts in-coming mail.
  • Maintains bulletin boards.
  • Performs clerical duties when necessary.
  • General cleaning and daily maintenance of the building.
  • Assist with Annual Inventory.
  • Performs a variety of support tasks such as processing materials and assisting with programs.
  • Attends and participates in trainings, networking events and attends and engages in staff meetings, including times outside of normally scheduled hours.

Minimum Training and Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions:

High School Diploma or equivalent required.  One year of clerical or library experience, or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills and abilities. Ability to operate equipment used in the workplace; and establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and library patrons.  Ability to follow specific instructions.  Ability to interact with patrons from various demographic groups.  Ability to type and use computers required.  Basic math skills are required. 

Physical Requirements to Perform Essential Job Functions:

Hearing and vision corrected to normal ranges.  Ability to operate office equipment.  Ability to exert moderate physical activity, including lifting up to 25 pounds, carrying, pushing and pulling.  Ability to stand or sit for extended periods of time.
